I was so happy to be a part of the Letarte swimwear shoot last week!
The Letarte label, created by sisters Lisa Cabrinha and Michele Letarte Ross mixes a bohemian essence with chic global aesthetics that the sister duo have made recognizable around the globe. It was torture - such beautiful clothes, I wanted everything!
There is a beautiful new Letatarte store in Greenwich CT, but you can also find Letarte in most upscale department stores such as Bergdorf's NYC.

2011 has been a great, super-busy year! I am so grateful to all of my clients who put their trust in me with their projects. Even though I have been in this industry for a looong time, I continue to ask myself, "what can I do to really knock it out of the ball-park?"

In 2012, I hope to continue to learn and to grow as an artist, to take the time to experiment on my own projects. I think its very important as a make-up artist, (or any kind of artist) to play and push boundaries.

This is Therese, she and her (now) husband came all the way from Sweden to get married in NYC! I'm often hired to do hair and make-up for out-of-town brides-to-be, these btb's often ask how they can forgo a trial and still be happy with their hair and make-up. Therese had a hair and make-up trial in Sweden, and then
sent me photo's of the results. This worked out very well, Therese was very happy - both the hair and make-up came out very close to what she had done in Sweden.
The beautiful hair accessory was a brooch that was given to her by her grandmother.

I love to do retro-inspired hair and make-up! If choosing to go in this direction for a special event, it's important that you don't end up looking too costumy - you don't want to appear like an actress playing the part of a woman from another era. To avoid this mistake, have some of the elements of your styling be current; in this look, the hair has the '20's - 40's finger wave, but the eye make-up is very smoky and current.

Congratulations Alison!

Yesterday my team and I met Alison G at her hotel suite in NYC to help make her and her wedding party fabulicious! Alison came all the way from England with her fiance and members of her family to exchange vows in the Big Apple! Alison told me that in February 2010, they were walking across The Brooklyn Bridge, when he suddenly got down on one knee and proposed to her! "Of course I will" she said, "But please get up - it's freezing!"
Here are some photo's my assistant, Jenn took during the hair and make-up preparations.

After the skin is prepped with the appropriate skin care products, I airbrushed Alison's skin for the ultimate flawless finish.

While I'm focusing on the bride; my talented team goes to work on the rest of the bridal party. This is Holly, she does the most amazing blow-out.

Tip: While doing intricate make-up work, never rest your hand on your client's face or your own - use a velour puff instead! I like the ones by Alcone cosmetics, NYC.

To press fake strip lashes so they're nice and snug against your own natural lashes, use the side (not the point!) of a toothpick. Always carry the wrapped toothpicks, that way they stay nice and clean !

Now to take these rollers out. Alison informed me that there's a new trend in Liverpool, England: girls are wearing hair rollers out in public, shopping etc! complete with glam earrings and make-up of course!

Alison's ready to dress, and looking picture perfect for her wedding!

I think our work is done here ladies, and its back to our studio for a well earned cup of tea!

I'm sure most people are familiar with the Sports Illustrated "painted on" bathing suits? Well those images inspired us to incorporate beauty and body painting! We spent last Sunday night with a very patient model, Susannah, who stood stock still for over three hours of my air brushing and body painting. The theme of this shot is "Summer" and we're planning more images to add to the mix. Check back soon for more installments...

This was one of the most memorable weddings that I had the pleasure of working on in 2010. Bhavika and Mike were generous enough to share her wedding album with me for my blog, I wish I could post all the photo's - they were amazing!
The ceremony was so beautiful and colorful, and the rituals very emotional.

I'm adding final touches to Bhavika's make-up here...

We tried a few different hairstyles before the wedding day, and Bhavika decided upon this wrapped bun. We later tucked in white flowers on one side.

And this is Mark, Bhavika's handsome husband!
Ladies -this is how the guys get ready on the big day! They take half an hour to shower, shave, and put on their wedding suit - and then take a little nip of something for the nerves :-)

"I'm getting married this summer, and was wondering if I would see a big improvement in my skin if I was to get regular professional facials? I do want my skin to be at it's best, but I am on a limited budget"

The better the condition of the skin, the less foundation and concealer you can get away with, and less is best! So I recommend that if you haven’t been practicing any kind of skin care regimen, now is a good time to start.

Professional facials are wonderful, (I personally love Bliss in NYC) but if they’re beyond your budget to indulge in regularly, at home regimens are very effective too.

It’s better to have a regular at home regimen, than to go to a Spa once in a while.

Many skin care companies offer online advice on products that are right for individual skin types.

I have found the Olay site to be very helpful (http://www.olay.com). They allow you to describe your skin type, age, and concerns, and they give you a skin care regimen that's right for you!

For more natural skin ingredients in skin care, I love Keihl's skin care products,

(http://www.kiehls.com). If you visit on of their stores or counters, they are happy to give you samples and advice, so you can try before you buy!

If you plan to go for a facial before the wedding day, do try out the Spa a couple of months before the wedding day, to make sure you don't have a bad reaction! If you get a facial the week before the wedding, make sure it's a gentle hydrating one - no extractions which can irritate your skin!

If you have problem skin, ie multiple pimples or acne, do visit a dermatologist - they can work wonders!

And lastly; if you have a last minute blemish or pimple, please don't poke and prod with it on your wedding day! your make-up artist can cover it much more effectively if it hasn't been freshly squeezed! Good luck!

Sharon is trying to decide on hairstyles for her upcoming wedding which she says will have a bit of a 1920's feel. I created this hairstyle for her. I felt that it will go with the dress very well, but would not look like part of a costume, which can be a danger when working with a theme. Hopefully we'll post photo's at a later date of the style that she decides on!

I love this elegant chignon! Bhavika has long luxurious hair, perfect for this style, but even if your hair is on the thin side, extensions can be added to give you the same look.

This half up/half down style is a good option for brides wishing to wear their hair loose, but at the same time, it is scooped off the face so it doesn't get in the way for photo's. Some loose styles can cause unflattering shadows across the face.

This glamorous style is absolutely timeless! Hair was set in pin-curls to make deep retro style waves.

Newly wed Tory has very curly hair, and her wedding was in July by the water - that could have been disastrous! This style shows her natural curl, but it was tammed a bit with a skinny curling iron, and pinned away from her face; this way it didn't get out of control during the festivities!

I love this forties inspired bridal look! It's a glamorous hairstyle that stays put all day!

Dr. Masterson is a very compassionate lady, who puts a lot of hard work into causes that she believes in.

Lisa M. Masterson, M.D. has pioneered the evolution of women’s healthcare into the 21st century. A specialist in obstetrics, gynecology, infertility, adolescent gynecology and family planning, Dr. Masterson has redefined the role of a gynecologist. She is also the co-host of the Emmy-winning hit syndicated daytime medical talk show, The Doctors, which enters its third season this fall, 2010.

Striving to provide global medical relief to underdeveloped regions, Dr. Masterson created Maternal Fetal Care International (MFCI), a charitable organization dedicated to making every mother and child count around the globe. Choosing a make-up artist for your wedding day

How do you begin your search when looking for a make-up artist for your wedding day?

Referrals are a good start; if you know someone recently married and they have enjoyed their make-up artist experience, ask whom they used. The Internet is also a great place to search.

Take a look at portfolios; an experienced make-up artist should have a wide selection of photos to show you their work. This can be done on-line, or you may want to stop by and meet the make-up artist in person; after all, as well as applying your make-up, this is someone that you will be spending a couple of hours with you on one of the most important days of your life!

Examine the style; make-up artists’ styles can vary a great deal. Are you looking for clean and natural, classic glamour, or perhaps you’re looking for a very fashion forward, edgy look? Would you like your make-up airbrushed, or would you prefer traditional make-up? You should feel like you share a common sense of esthetics with your make-up artist.

Make a short list of make-up artists.

Include as much information as possible in your inquiry: Your wedding date, approximate time you have to be ready by, how many people require make-up, and if the make-up artist needs to travel. Ask for rates. For a large wedding party, a good make-up artist will work with additional make-up artists, and not try to rush through a large party by themselves.

Costs of services vary widely; to find a stylist whose approach you like and who’s within your budget, start your search as soon as possible. A make-up artist with a good reputation will have some dates booked far in advance.

After your research, it’s a good idea to make an appointment for a trial with one or two artists that you think may be the best fit for you.

Ask the make-up artist to pencil you in for your wedding date until you have your trial.

Bring photos from magazines of looks that you like and also photos of yourself taken when you feel that you’ve looked your best, this will give your make-up artist a sense of your style. If you are very happy with how you look, you can make a decision as to whether you would like to secure him/her for your wedding day.

To secure the date most make-up artists require a deposit and a signed contract.

Spring has sprung!

You may recognize the lovely model Susannah from previous posts on this blog, she is a wonderful muse, and will put up with anything! In the past I've pasted her eyebrows down with glue, teased her hair so much it took an hour to comb it out, and she's willingly suffered many more indignities in the name of art!

I was inspired by my Spring garden for this look. I used Make-up Forever Aqua Color pencils to underline her eyes, they come in very intense colors that are really waterproof and smudge-proof!
By the way; I also made the hat, which was a lot of fun.

Bhavikas bridal hair and make-up trial

Bhavika is getting married later this year, and so she came in searching for a hair and make-up look that would be right for one of her wedding looks.
She doesn't ordinarily like to wear much make-up, but felt very comfortable with this look. I chose soft plum and pink eyeshadow, with a smokey charchoal liner. Her base and blush are airbrushed for a very natural, but long lasting effect.

Bhavika wanted an up-do for the early part of the day, and then she will have her hair loose for later. When she let's her hair down, it will brush out into beautiful waves very easily.
Most chignons need extra hair pieces to look this full and luxurious.

Fashion week with Katrina Szish

It’s been a great week working with style expert/fashion guru Katrina Szish who was the exclusive correspondent for Mercedes-Benz fashion week! We rendezvoused early every morning and started hair and make-up. What a week! Today has been the first day in a week that I’ve been able to sleep in past 4:00 a.m!

The minute Katrina arrived each day for hair and make-up, she inspired me with the fantastic ensemble she had chosen for the day. Katrina is quite the trooper; at least I got to go home at a reasonable time each day - she was going on three hours sleep each night and still looked fantastic everyday!

Days Working with fashion corespondent Katrina Szish, (aka "Szish the dish" in some circles :-) are always full of fun. I never know what Katrina will pull out of her garment bag when she arrives at the studio, it's like Alladin's cave for fashionistas!
She has such a sense of adventure in fashion, and when it comes to hair and make-up is always eager to try something new.

Keeping it natural

Cindy Chin came to me looking for bridal make-up that would look natural and classic, and would photograph great too! Cindy has great skin, so I kept the air-brushed make-up sheer and emphasized her great cheek bones with some rosy blush and contour. Usually she only wears lip gloss, so I kept the lip color soft so that she would feel comfortable with it.
She wanted to wear her hair up, but didn't want it too stuffy and formal. This Chignon, styled low on her head, was just what she was looking for; young and chic - the perfect bridal hairstyle!
Here is a before and after photo: She looks fantastic before make-up and hair, so I definitely did not want to change her too much!

Red lipstick, of course!

One of the easiest, most inexpensive ways to add a little festive glamour for the holidays is with your lip-color! And for all of you who lament, “I can’t wear red lipstick!” I say, “There is a red for everyone.” Go to the make-up counters and try before you buy.

One red lipstick can give multiple looks, depending on how it’s applied. For a fashion forward look, try smudging the color into your lips with your finger. This gives a much softer look, and if you keep the rest of the face minimal and fresh looking, is a great way to wear red during the day.

For a Hollywood glamour look that lasts; first make sure you have a little foundation and powder around your lip line, this will give a more defined edge, and prevent feathering.
Next, using a good quality, highly pigmented pencil (I like MAC pencils) to line your lips. Make sure your pencil has a nice point; otherwise you’ll get a blurry line.
Extra tip: To make sharpening easier, put the pencil in the fridge for 15 minutes or so. This prevents your pencil from breaking as you sharpen.

If you want to make your lips fuller, you can go slightly outside your natural lip line, but my rule of thumb is; no more than the point of a (freshly sharpened) pencil width wider, otherwise you’ll look like The Joker! Blend the inside of the liner into your lips.
Load color onto your lip brush, and apply one coat of color, inside the now defined area. Blot well with a tissue until no color comes off, (I find cheap white tissues with no lotion work best for make-up use). Repeat application, adding a little extra lipstick in the center of your lips for sheen and moisture.
Extra tip: If your lips are prone to feathering, try this – after blotting, apply translucent powder (make-up kit staple) over the edge of your lips with a make-up sponge

For a special holiday look, try adding a little gold shimmer to the center of your lips! You can use gold lip-gloss or lipstick, or even a little gold eye shadow!

Mathu Anderson, Non-Conventional beauty

Yesterday I had the rare opportunity to watch a master in action! Mathu Anderson has made up icons from Rupaul to Gwen Stefani, and has worked with some of the best photographers in the industry.

I watched awestruck along with other industry make-up artists at the MAC PRO store NYC, as he worked his magic demonstrating two different looks for us. You might expect someone of Mr Mathus stature to be a bit full of himself, but that couldn't be further from the truth. He chatted with us as he worked on his model, answering our (often naive) questions with dignity and respect; he was very gracious.

He went over one of his brow hiding techniques, which involves applying layers of UHU glue, (that's right, regular stick paper glue!) until smooth and then carefully applying make-up over the top when it's thoroughly dry. It took about half an hour to dry, and Mathu took that time to tell us about his illustrious career, give advice and to answer more questions.

Of all the days not to have my camera! drat! I cannot begin to describe his creation that day, because I'm not that good a writer. I think all of us left feeling very inspired by him, and a little star-struck too!

I only hope that Mathu Anderson works on a book showcasing some of his signature looks in the very near future, I would be the first in line to buy it!

I did a shoot with the very talented Joe Henson, and the very stunning Christie Beran a few weeks ago. Just wanted to share this image with you all!

This is not an actual cover of a bridal magazine, but I just wanted to demonstrate that with the right hair styling and make-up, and of course the lighting of a master photographer - you too can look like a model bride!

Not many girls could look this cute sans make-up and hair in rollers!

Tyson Beckford stopped by the studio!

Look who stopped by the studio today! Tyson is even more handsome in person, and soo charming and nice. I look like I'm 4' tall next to him don't I? (I'm 5'6"). He roared up to the studio looking like a life size action figure on his motorcycle. He's going to be in a new action movie, which involves lots of motorcycle action!

Hold the hair spray

This is a very elegant, easy to wear bridal hairstyle. The shiny finish was achieved by using Redkens #3 pomade, (My new favorite hair product).
for sleek styles like this, I like to hold off on the hair spray and use a grooming cream, or pomade instead.

She is from Norway, and she used to be a nanny here in NYC when she was younger and she wanted to tie the knot in the 'big apple', her favorite city. Lashes - what's the difference?

We’re being bombarded with images of huge, super-sized eyelashes lately aren’t we? Every magazine you open, TV commercials they’re everywhere! I saw a mascara commercial recently, I swear her eyelashes curled back and reached her eyebrows, they were so long and pointy! It’s like they’re lashes on steroids, AHH! They’re attacking me! – oh thank God it was just a dream. OK, let’s get real - mascara can’t do that!
And the ads in magazines, the lashes look as though they’re drawn in with a sharpy marker. Well they are, kind of, not with a Sharpie, but with Photoshop. Yes a lot of it is smoke and mirrors, and lots and lots of expert Photo shop.
But, the good news is; you can still give the illusion of having incredible looking lashes in real life.

Here’s the skinny on fat lashes:

Mascara: There’s lengthening, fattening, waterproof, colored…Sorry, I was supposed to be making this understandable for you, right?

Individual fake lashes: These aren’t actually individual – Ha! fooled you didn’t they! They’re in fact ‘clusters’ of lashes, held together with a little knot. They’re applied kind of snuggled in with your own lashes. They ‘rest’ on your own lashes, (think of your own lashes like a shelf) they look very natural when applied correctly. You should not use surgical glue with these! The surgical glue inhibits your own lashes from growing properly. Use the latex Duo glue available in white or black, which will wash off with your regular eye-make-up remover. (Really, the day after a good night out, you’ll find them stuck all over you bathroom sink, Ugh, gross, it will really freak your boyfriend out – that and your spanks on the floor).

Strip lashes – Yes, strippers wear them (sorry girls – ‘dancers’) but that’s not why they’re called strip lashes. They come attached to a fine band, or ‘strip’. My faves are 360’s and 311’s from Alcone Cosmetics, and #7’s and #9’s from MAC. Most people have to trim the length, that makes them feel much more comfortably, and they will stay on longer.
Strip lashes are lots of fun. They come in all colors and shapes, even with feathers! Ricky’s of NYC has a great selection. Just remember the thicker the band, the less flexible they will be.
Do not use permanent glue with strip lashes, and do not attach them between your natural lash line and your eyeball! That can really damage your eyes!

Semi-permanent lashes – These are permanently attached, one fake lash to one real lash. They are bonded to your own lashes with surgical type glue. When done correctly, by a trained, certified technician, they should last as long as your natural lashes last. Your own lashes last between 30 -90 days. The technician cannot tell how old your lashes are; so she may attach a fake lash to one of your lashes that is destined to fall out tomorrow. That’s why you should have a refill appointment every now and then. The first appointment should take about 2 1/2 hours. It will cost about $250.00 – $300.00. It is a very intricate procedure, but worth every penny. Only have this procedure done by a trained, certified technician.
